Trump Calls for Jailing of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Arrive in City

Former President Donald Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"The city's leader should be jailed for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump posted on his platform early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic party.

These remarks coincide with the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, despite vehement protests from Illinois authorities including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This represents yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going put."

The governor responded via online channels, stating: "I will not back down. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward full-blown autocracy?"

As of midweek, military units from Texas had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 50 miles from the city, as the administration advances with its hardline urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", despite police data indicate notable reductions in many offenses, such as homicides.

On Wednesday, two hundred state guard members were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred state military forces preparing to mobilize, according to reports. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with Texas national guard patches were spotted at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the perimeter.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered no-fly zones over the army reserve center for safety concerns until early December.

Federal authorities has escalated immigration enforcement in the city in recent weeks, sparking demonstrations, especially near an immigration center in Broadview.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit against the federal government, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and risky".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is scheduled for the next day.

The mayor also issued an executive order on that day prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using municipal facilities as operation bases for enforcement actions.

The governor has accused the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on the previous day, he said that the president is trying to "rationalize and normalize the presence of military personnel under his direct command."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. However, the president has said he would be willing to invoke the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to send regular army in states that are unable to suppress an insurrection or are defying federal law.

After beginning his second term, the president has sent or discussed deploying military units to at least 10 urban centers, such as major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Data indicates that serious offenses nationwide has declined in the past few years. In the city, for example, murders were reduced nearly one-third to 278 through late summer, according to police data.

A recent poll released on Wednesday revealed that most Americans oppose the sending of military forces without an foreign danger.
