This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
