The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform disclosed that it now features more than 1 bn content made with AI.
Trial and Implementation
This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a widespread rollout. This advancement coincides with a surge in content created by AI, driven by recent content generation software.
The Broader AI Trend
Recent reports that nearly a tenth of the fastest-growing video streams on a competing service exclusively feature content made by AI. A large amount of this material is considered mass-produced AI material, a phrase for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or surreal.
Our research shows that many people appreciate content produced via AI tools, from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to offer the community the ability to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own likes,” said a spokesperson.
Scale of AI Content
The platform announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its service tagged as AI-generated. In total, more than 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the app daily, making AI content a relatively small part of its overall inventory.
User Control Features
Viewers will be capable of limit or boost the level of AI-generated videos they view by opening the content preference option in the app and choosing AI-made media. Additional categories that currently be controlled under the filter include news, fashion, beauty, and choreography.
Platform Guidelines
Its policies mandate content makers to label “realistic” artificially created content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is without a tag can be taken down under its terms of service.
Furthermore, the platform will now apply an “AI-made” tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or detected by an cross-platform project for identifying artificial media. This step is aimed to deter users from trying to evade the disclosure requirement.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is also establishing a $2m educational fund for experts and groups to produce educational content about using AI responsibly. This project will assist educational bodies focused on teaching programming and robotics.
Content Safety Approach
The video-sharing app has supported its safety measures, amid discussion over plans to lay off numerous safety staff in Britain. It is set to cut a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that staff are being displaced by automated systems.
A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by removing the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by people. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.
We believe it is crucial to balance humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
