EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
